Super Smashed

I read somewhere that the best way to write something is to just write what you know, so sometimes I get my ideas from just normal stuff I do during the week. Last week? My son is addicted to the Super Smash Bros. demo I downloaded to his 3DS, so I had Smash Bros, on my mind, so somewhere along the line this idea came to me. I am aware that if you have no idea what Super Smash Bros. is then first off I feel sorry for you and second I know this, but I liked the idea anyway, so screw it.

Wow, what a hectic couple of weeks...oh that's right I haven't actually told you what my big surprise was last week haven't I? Well, here's picture clue:

Yep, that's me and yes, I got married last Tuesday, hence why I've had no spare time what so ever to do any work and if I have I've been so tired that I've been sleeping! So sorry again for posting and old cartoon again, but I have a good excuse! But never fear as of this week my new working day is now Wednesday as my 2 boys daycare days have changed, so the good news is that I have plenty of time to 'tweek' all my 'toons or work on them now....I hope! And now that all this wedding stuff is done and dusted I can also work on my 2014 plans for my blog site! Like new and more regular content, yay!

High Definition

The other day I started typing up a series of Blog posts I plan to publish soon that will go into greater detail on exactly how I come up with the ideas for my cartoons and what tools and methods I use. I've been meaning to do this for some time now as it's something I've experimented with and refined a lot over the years so I thought it would be nice to share. And hey, if it helps save anyone else some time and inspire or help them, that would be really cool.

I mention this, because this idea came from the very first step that I will cover, which is to always carry a notebook with you everywhere you go and write down anything you see, hear or think that's even remotely funny...even if it's something someone else says. Now I can't even remember the exact conversation, but my mate Ben and I were talking the other week and somehow "High Definition" came up and Ben said something about a guy, really high reading out a dictionary. I actually asked him if that was a joke he heard and he said he just came up with it then and there, so I got my old trusty notebook out and of course asked permission to use it....which came out as "I'm so stealing that". But, as I always try and do (sometimes I forget) when someone else contributes to a cartoon idea, I try and sneak their name into the cartoon somehow. If you look carefully, the brand of the old crap TV is 'Maskey', which is Ben's last name....and he's old and shit also, so I thought it fit well. Cheers Ben!

Back to Reality

Happy Birthday to my blog! Happy Birthday to you!!

Yep, it's been a whole year since I started this crazy blog thing....well technically the actual 'birth' date is the 28th, but as I always update, and it started on a Monday, I thought I'd officially celebrate today! I've been tweaking the site this afternoon and I'm still working on the new banner logo, I'm just running out of time! Hopefully I've got my .com stuff sorted, which, if you go to my fancy www.brinkcartoons.com, it should take you directly to this site now! (well, not quite yet, I'm still ironing out the bugs) I was planning on a massive revamp of this site for today, but time has gotten the better of me unfortunately , but I am still doing it so never fear. So sorry if it looks a bit all over the place at the moment, hopefully everything will be up and running again soon.

I'm pretty excited that I've made it to a year and according to my stats, this month is looking to be the best one yet as far as overall page-views are concerned, it's awesome! I'm very proud of what I've accomplished over the last year, especially as this blog was originally just a test to see if I could get back into doing regular cartoons again, on Monday's while my son is in daycare. But now, I'm really attached to this site and I really want it to get bigger and bigger and more popular! Who would have thought, from it's humble beginnings as a simple email I sent to family and friends that I'd have a regular blog. Not much to say about the idea on this one, I just dug it out of one of my notebooks this morning and just thought "You know what, I want to draw that one today". The only lesson here is to always write down any idea you get, as you never know when it can be used and come in handy. Another thing I'm excited about is I'm working on evolving my style to a more traditional cartoon look and working on my 'flow' by curving lines to flow together. Look at the guy holding the clipboard for example, every part of his body curves and flows in different directions and I'm also working on slimming down the way I draw limbs and making them more 'cartoony'. Do you like it? It's not much different now, but it will be as I work on it more, this is just the beginning. It is hard to describe, I know what I'm talking about ;-) my next Friday Night Art I'll try to show you with some sketches and examples and I'll try and describe it better.

Another side-note, I have a Pinterest site up, there's nothing there at the moment, but in the next few weeks, once I finish updating this site, I'm going to post my cartoons there and also post up lots of pictures of all my 'tools of the trade' (basically pics of everything I use to make my cartoons). I'll keep you all posted on my progress!

Just Say No

Hello again! So today I was told by my wonderful lady that I needed a day off to myself as I was worn out. Yes it's true, I'm bad like that I'll keep going until someone forces me to stop, but there's always so much to do! So, I dug into my 'vault' of old cartoons this week so I can have a nice relaxing day of doing sweet FA.....


A quick note on this cartoon though: I always go on about how difficult it can be to write humorous cartoon ideas, but every now and again, they can just magically pop! Into your brain, it's a rare and wonderful thing I must say. Like this one! One day I was grocery shopping and I noticed a sign saying "Say no to plastic bags" and the first thought that popped into my head? "Say no, what are the bags trying to sell me weed or something?" I really like the idea of a plastic bag trying to sell weed....am I alone here?


Easy done, anyway I hope you like it, I'll be back next week with some new material now that my creative juices have had a recharge, until then, see ya!

The Steaks are High

Hello again my friends!


Holy crap this was a last minute cartoon idea, that's for sure! I had no idea what I was doing today until about lunchtime, I spent all morning brainstorming ideas and was coming up short. Yes it's true I do have notebooks full of ideas, but nearly all of them are raw and unfinished. As much as I love brainstorming ideas, it can be very frustrating at times when you spend hours pouring over notebooks to end up with nothing. But when you finally get a really awesome idea it's such a good feeling. Like last week, when that idea fully came to me I was so happy, especially as the original idea was so old, never give up that's what I say. It's true that there's no such thing as a bad idea,  it just needs more work. I really need to do more idea work so I have plenty of ideas ready, so I won't get all panicky like today, it's just hard because seriously it can very time consuming with little reward, but I'm damn determined and dedicated! You lot better appreciate what I do for your entertainment. Anyway the original idea for this 'toon was a bunch of anthropomorphic steaks playing poker whilst smoking bongs and joints at a casino and two guys go to join the table and one says "Hold up, the steaks are way too high at this table". Instead of that I thought I'd streamline the gag more, plus anthropomorphic steaks would be harder to pull off than bulls that's for sure. Plus I thought having high bulls was funnier anyway. It's been awhile since I've done a good old weed gag, probably because it's been awhile since I've smoked any. Funny how being high opens your mind....to jokes about being high. 


One of the things I really like about using this Blogger website is the highly detailed stats I can always access about my blog. Such as, I can see exactly how many people have viewed the page and from what country they're from. Like my number 1 country by a mile is obviously Australia, followed by the US, but third is Germany! Hell yeah, here's a shout out to all my German peeps! It's very cool. I can also see how people got to the page, by links for example. It also tells me what search keywords people used to find my page as well, and guess what phrase someone searched for and got to me? "Horse Dildo" HAHAHAHAHAHA! If you may remember awhile ago I did a cartoon set in an animal porn shop (http://brinkscartoons.blogspot.com/2011/05/animal-farm.html) and in the blog text I mentioned the 'horse dildo' pictured. How funny is that? Some weirdo searching for a horse dildo ended up here! Man he (or she, you never know, maybe she wanted a dildo the size of a horse wang) must have been rather disappointed...or maybe not, if your now a fan sir (or madam) I salute you! I'm not one to judge, a fan is a fan in my book, what gets you off is your business. Strangely enough though some other keywords that got me traffic are: "porno animal" and "toon bestiality". Wow, got that market corned..... So just out of interest 
I put the term "horse dildo" in Google and holy shit, I don't recommend it, and I didn't even 
pop up on the first page! I didn't have the stomach to keep looking past page one honestly. 
So here's another shout out to all my fans who dig animals, like more than a friend! Let's 
just hope I get some traffic from "High Bulls" this week! Or perhaps I should just throw in 
some weird words and see what happens.......cat rectum
